The lack of reading, writing and calculating abilities critically constrains learning in the workplace. It is often said that our schooling system does not produce the desired foundational competence for graduates from the school system to function optimally in the workplace. SAQA has published a draft part qualification for Mathematical and Communication competence in the workplace. Candidates who obtain the qualification will be able to speak, listen, read and write meaningfully and effectively in the language of instruction, so that they can progress further in their chosen occupational pathways and workplace contexts and deal effectively with its generic mathematical demands. The key purpose of the part qualification is to address learning progression barriers in occupational learning at NQF levels 2 to 4.
