Industry Development Initiatives
SAOGA is a key player in working to ensure that the general industry environment in South Africa is conducive to the development of the upstream supply base. Some of the ways we are currently engaged in this role:
Skills development and training. Click here for more.
Supplier development. We engage in a range of work to improve the quality and capability of local suppliers. In the past we have placed substantial emphasis on ISO Quality Management Certification and we continue to encourage this standards based approach to business. Recently we have embarked on more systematic competitive supplier development initiatives in conjunction with UNIDO and several large private sector companies. Click here for more.
Infrastructure studies. Investment in infrastructure is key to growth of local industry and SAOGA has taken a lead role in conceiving and studying possibilities for future development. Click here for some of the recent studies.
Regulatory and policy initiatives. SAOGA plays a facilitative role in helping industry to address regulatory and policy problems that impact the industry. We are currently involved in several initiatives that impact the industry:
- Creation of an industry bond to overcome various customs and tax issues related to the import/export and storage of oil and gas related material and equipment. Click here for more.
- The Port Authority's concessioning process for the key ship repair facilities in South African harbours - the facilities are a key part of the rig/ship repair and upgrade sector. Click here for more.
- Creation of an Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) "freezone" at Saldanha Bay (and possibly another oil and gas focused IDZ in Cape Town).
- Creation of a national industrial development strategy for the upstream oil and gas sector.
