Investment Promotion and Support

South Africa and, in particular Cape Town, is a desirable location for global upstream companies in the region. It is an easy place to do business, has a sophisticated and relatively low-cost business and logistical infrastructure, is a highly desirable location for personnel and is conveniently situated on the routes between East and West Africa.  At the same time operating conditions and costs in other African countries remain tough and expensive. Cape Town is already a significant logistics and maritime service and repair hub for the West African upstream industry and we believe there is a clear opportunity to increase the strength and attractiveness of the South African supplier base by attracting a broad range of global upstream companies into the country. The vision is for the Western Cape province of South Africa to emerge as a significant oil and gas hub for the sub-Saharan region.

Many of the major upstream service companies are already established in South Africa and to a large extent the process of foreign companies locating in the Western Cape continues at a healthy pace without much intervention from SAOGA but we do have a role to play in strengthening the proposition. Current activities and initiatives to help companies looking to establish or expand their presence in South Africa include:

  • Point of contact and source of information for foreign companies considering investment or partnering in South Africa.
  • Introductions to other South African agencies responsible for investment and trade promotion e.g. South Africa's DTI, Wesgro (a regional investment and trade agency).
  • Introductions to potential partners and local suppliers.
  • Work with a range of foreign trade and investment agencies (UKTI, Innovation Norway, SAIBL - a US initiative) to help match local and foreign companies or help foreign companies establish a presence.
  • Can offer "hotdesks" and temporary office space to companies considering establishing an office or in the early stages of setting up in South Africa.
