UNIDO Opportunity Alert - Extension
Opportunity Alert Extension: Friday 17 June 2011 Industry Capability Survey: Nuclear and Related Industries The Integrated Electricity Resource Plan for South Africa - 2010 to 2030 IRP 2010 describes the requisite electricity capacity expansion plan for South Africa and serves as input to other planning functions, including economic and industrial development. The IRP included a recommendation of 9 600 MW of nuclear power, with the first new plant being operational in 2023. The IRP was promulgated on 28 March 2011. The Industrial Policy Action Plan 2010/11 - 2012/13 (IPAP 2), published by the Department of Trade and Industry identified the Nuclear Industry as an industry with potential for the development of long-term advanced capabilities in South Africa. Successful localisation of nuclear equipment and services will require a fleet approach to ensure economies of scale, meeting of nuclear quality and regulatory standards, technology and skills transfer, an appropriate combination of global partnerships and access to global supply chains, funding and skills development. The various investments will have to be carefully phased into the future nuclear programme and into appropriate government-led programmes to ensure that local procurement is boosted and localisation maximised. Due to the relatively long planning, negotiation and construction period of nuclear power plants, the need to understand South Africa's localisation potential is already urgent. Please complete the Nuclear capabilities spreadsheet and UNIDO profile form as soon as possible and return tov.bungane@unido.org by Friday 17 June 2011.
