Gas 101 Webinar

The Essentials of LNG: Contributing to the Development of the Gas Industry

The South African Oil and Gas Association (SAOGA), along with International Gas Union and Shell will host a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) webinar for the SAOGA’s membership and interested parties, on 19 May 2020, 10:00-11:45.  The aim of the webinar will be to share information and knowledge of LNG and its potential role as a transition fuel in the South African market. It is anticipated that natural gas will feature more prominently in South Africa’s energy mix, as the Government aims to diversify the country’s primary energy sources, currently dominated by coal, to improve security of energy supply, promote economic development and reduce SA’s overall carbon footprint. Natural gas has significant potential as a new energy source for SA, with its ability to complement a growing renewable energy sector and foster reduced emissions through coal to gas switching in the power sector. However, adding gas on a significant scale to the economy comes with a number of challenges and opportunities.

The webinar will provide participants with material, packaged to deliver concise, content-rich presentations, on natural gas, global LNG markets and why LNG makes sense for South Africa. While gas is available in limited quantities in certain parts of the country, South Africa is planning to make greater use of the resource nationally through LNG imports and potentially through domestic gas resources. SAOGA sees value for there to be a broader appreciation of the benefits of LNG and the fundamentals of the global LNG market. This includes de-risking the future development of indigenous gas resources, establishing wider uses for gas in the South African context and growing the sector including capacity of local South African entities to participate in the sector as it develops.

LNG is traded in a global marketplace, where supply is linked to markets by global shipping.  The webinar will provide information on why countries are choosing LNG and provide an understanding of how the global LNG market works, and what the outlook for LNG is – both globally and as a fuel of choice for South Africa.  The discussion will not cover the recent RMIPPPP or the impending 3000MW LNG IPP procurement.
